Alberni by Kuma brings Japanese style and sensibility to Coal Harbour

Japanese starchitect Kengo Kuma and Vancouver-based developer Westbank have partnered on the upcoming Alberni by Kuma in Coal Harbour, and the plans are nothing short of spectacular.

Westbank and Kengo Kuma unveiled Alberni by Kuma at the Japan Unlayered exhibition, currently underway at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The exhibition celebrates contemporary Japanese architecture, design and culture, and features a MUJI pop-up store as well as models of the upcoming 43-storey tower.

Presales for the tower at 1550 Alberni Street will begin this March, starting at over $1 million for a studio apartment. As you can see from the prices below, the development is definitely not entry level – Westbank calls it “super prime” real estate.

Preliminary pricing at Alberni by Kuma provided to realtors shows studios starting at $1.16 million, with sub penthouses starting at $11.9 million. Pricing subject to change.

The 188-unit tower, which features a unique curved design clad in aluminium panels, is meant to preserve views from neighbouring buildings. The building also features extensive use of wood, both on the exterior and in the interior design. There will be a ground floor eatery called Waketokuyama Japanese Restaurant. The restaurant’s Tokyo location has two Michelin stars and this will be the first location outside of Japan.

The building’s residents will enjoy a private inner garden, wine tasting room, listening (music) room, gym, indoor swimming pool, art gallery and more.

Some units will feature a Japanese soaking tubs on the balcony, also known as an ofuro. The penthouse will have a rooftop pool with a spectacular view of English Bay.
