Japanese architect to design upcoming Coal Harbour luxury condos

Luxury Coal Harbour condo building a first for Japanese architect

A Vancouver-based developer is partnering with an eclectic, award-winning Japanese architect to design a new luxury condo tower in Coal Harbour.

PortLiving announced Wednesday that they are going to be working with Shigeru Ban on his first project ever in Canada.

The yet-to-be-named condo development will be built at 1250 West Hastings Street between Bute and Alberni streets, at the former site of proposed “The Views” project, which did not go forward.

“Shigeru Ban’s residential projects span the globe, from Villa Vista on the exotic coastline of Sri Lanka to Metal Shutter House in Manhattan, Cast Iron House in Tribeca and Curtain Wall House in the architect’s birthplace of Tokyo. This new residential development in Coal Harbour will be the architect’s tallest structure designed to-date,” reads a press release issued by PortLiving.

Ban is the recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious award in modern architecture. He is known for his use of unconventional materials such as cardboard tubes, used in temporary structures such as disaster shelters. He is also known for the extensive use of wood and timber in his designs.

The development will be officially unveiled later this year, but in the meantime, take a look at some of Ban’s other incredible projects around the globe:
