Micro-dwellings at Main and Powell in Downtown Eastside

A surface parking lot at Main and Powell on the edge of Gastown will soon be home to six-storeys of micro-dwellings.

The development at 138 Main Street — next to the income assistance office — will include 70 micro dwelling units (28 market rental and 42 social housing units).

The self-contained micro units are between 250 – 320 square feet, with 14 units per floor.

The units will include fold-down beds and other custom furniture to maximize space. The design of the units will also allow them to be combined to create one and two bedroom units, should the need arise in the future. Most the units will have Juliet balconies, and a shared roof garden and lounge will be provided for the use of tenants.

A basement level will provide storage for 50 of the 70 units. Rents will be below market, and no vehicle parking will be provided.

The project is being developed by the Anhart Community Housing Society, and the architect is Birmingham & Wood Architects + Planners.

The application is part of the Social Housing or Rental Tenure (SHORT) program.

An open house is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Dodson Hotel, 25 East Hastings Street.
