Mount Pleasant office building to fuse heritage home with modern structure

Conwest Group is preparing to begin construction on a unique, 52,000 square foot office and light industrial building on West 6th in Mount Pleasant, built around one of Vancouver’s oldest heritage homes.

The new building will be four storeys, with a modern glass façade, in sharp contrast to the 1901-built Coulter House, which will be restored and offered for lease as a restaurant. The home is on Vancouver’s heritage register.

A City of Vancouver report says the house “will be painted in a two-tone colour scheme comprising of off-white (light grey) and medium grey: these are researched historic colours from the turn of the twentieth century, and are considered appropriate for a building of this era.”

The report states city staff “have concluded that the rehabilitation scheme is consistent with best conservation practices.”

The development will have two levels of underground parking, as well as a large rooftop patio with skyline views of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains.

Across the street from the development site are several older homes, from when the area was a predominantly working-class residential district at the turn of the century.
