Boston-based Northeastern University has announced its moving into the upcoming office tower at 400 West Georgia, developed by Westbank and Allied.
The university is currently based in temporary headquarters at 333 Seymour Street, and will move to the upcoming 24-storey office tower when it opens in 2021.
Vancouver’s booming tech scene and its need for skilled workers is one of the reasons Northeastern University has its eye on Vancouver. The new campus will be across the street from Amazon’s new office building at The Post — where up to 3,000 workers will be based.
“There’s a need for computer scientists here, and it’s explicit,” says Steve Eccles, regional chief executive officer and dean of the Vancouver campus. “We’re tightly aligned with that need. Because we’re driven by experiential learning, we’ll be putting graduates into those high technology jobs who are going to be extremely well prepared and road-tested through co-op.”
The Vancouver campus offers a master’s of computer science, and something called the “Align,” — a master’s of computer science for people who did not study in the computing field as undergraduates.
Northeastern University will join Deloitte and co-working company Spaces at 400 West Georgia. Apple has also reportedly leased 60,000 sq ft. of space in the new tower.
400 West Georgia was designed by Japan-based OSO Design and Vancouver-based Merrick Architecture.
