The concept for the expansion of Coopers Park into an under-utilized area under the Cambie Street Bridge has been revealed.
Right now, the area under the bridge is paved with concrete and not very welcoming. However, it is covered — a rarity for Vancouver park space and a plus in our rainy climate.
The proposed design is a “Pacific Northwest-themed outdoor fitness area for calisthenics and parkour exercises.”
It will include a rocky outcrop for climbing and jumping, as well as a variety of exercise bars arranged in a whale skeleton design.
Lighting will be a major feature of the new space, emphasizing the coastal theme by animating the underside of the bridge with shifting water patterns and highlighting the surface features with a warm glow.
The existing playground on the south side of the seawall will also be upgraded as part of the work, with a giant red octopus climbing structure at its centre.
Construction on the expansion of Coopers Park is expected to start in spring 2020, coinciding with seismic upgrade work to the Cambie Street Bridge.
