Award-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has designed a new luxury condo tower for Coal Harbour that will be the tallest timber building in the world.
Architectural Digest is reporting that the new building, called Terrace House, will be built by Vancouver developer PortLiving on a site on West Pender Street, between Bute and Jervis streets. The building will be the architect’s first project in Canada.
Details on the tower are sparse, but according to the developer, the structure will be the “tallest hybrid timber structure in the world.”
Wood for the tower, which will be all residential condo units, will be sourced from B.C. More details on this unique new addition to Vancouver’s skyline will be released later this year.
UBC is currently building its own “tall wood building,” a new, 18 storey student residence building that will open in September 2017.
In 2014, Ban was named the 37th recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious award in modern architecture.
