Pinnacle Lougheed in Burnaby will be home to the tallest tower west of Toronto once complete.
A rezoning application by Pinnacle International has been submitted to the City of Burnaby with new details and renderings of the project, adjacent to Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station and the City of Lougheed development.
The architects are JYOM — the same firm that designed the proposed Beach Crescent tower for Pinnacle next to the Granville Street Bridge. It’s not difficult to see definite similarities in the architectural language of both projects.
The development will be developed in three phases, with the tallest tower included as part of phase one. Tower 1A will be 73 storeys, and Tower 1B will be 80 storeys, making it the tallest tower in Canada west of Toronto.
There will be a total of 1,466 units in phase one of Pinnacle Lougheed, as well as 515,097 square feet of office space and 13,305 of commercial retail space.
A total of 2,680 parking stalls, over 14 floors of underground parking, is proposed, making for what should be an impressive excavation once construction gets underway.
Pinnacle will transfer the affordable units required by the City of Burnaby to its nearby development on Carrigan Court.

Burnaby’s Lougheed Town Centre could soon be home to the tallest building in Canada, west of Toronto.
Developer Pinnacle International is in the early stages of a rezoning application for their six acre property at Austin Road and Gatineau Place, next to the Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station. The site was formerly home to a Sears Outlet store, which was converted into the presentation centre for Shape’s City of Lougheed project.
The upcoming Pinnacle project will consist of three towers, interconnected with sky bridges between the towers and to the Lougheed Mall precinct.
The tallest tower, the east tower, will be 82 storeys tall (approximately 900 ft.) and include retail, hotel and residential. The west tower will be 67 storeys, with retail, office and residential, and the south tower will be 62 storeys tall with retail and residential. It’s not known what hotel brand will be on the project.
For comparison, the tallest tower in downtown Vancouver is the Living Shangri-La residences and hotel at 659 ft., or 62 storeys.
No renderings are available yet, but Pinnacle says the design “is inspired by nature with the three buildings metaphorically representing an ensemble of flowers expressed through appropriate massing and architectural articulation.”
Burnaby’s recently implemented Rental Use Zoning Policy means 20 per cent of the units need to be rental. A city report says in order to meet objectives of delivering rental housing, especially those offered at affordable rates, the proposed floor area and tower form is “considered supportable.”
The retail, hotel and office use in the development will total approximately 430,000 sq ft.
As part of the development, Gatineau Place will be realigned to sync up with a new north-south road through the City of Lougheed site. There will also be a new, covered transit plaza adjacent to the SkyTrain and bus loop.
The architecture firm involved in the proposal is not yet known.
The tallest building in Canada is currently the First Canadian Place office tower in Toronto, but not for long — two residential towers currently under construction (The One – 83 storeys) and (YSL Residences – 85 storeys — pictured left) will soon eclipse it.
In Burnaby, the tallest building is Sovereign, completed by Bosa Properties in 2015.
