New hospital expected to open in 2027
Construction of the new St. Paul’s Hospital — the largest hospital development project in B.C. history — kicked off Monday.
The new hospital, officially called “St Paul’s Hospital at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre” will have a capacity of 548 beds, which includes 115 net new beds. Pattison made a $75 million donation to the project four years ago.
The project overall will cost $2.174 billion, with $1.327 billion coming from the province, $225 million from fundraising and the balance from the sale of the Burrard Street property to Concord Pacific for nearly $1 billion.
The new St. Paul’s will be constructed by PCL and is expected to open in 2027. It will be constructed to a LEED Gold standard (at minimum). The design will include Indigenous elements, including a spiritual garden, artwork and sacred space.

Providence Health Care says the new St. Paul’s will be built to withstand rising temperatures, extreme weather, seismic activity and predicted sea level rise to function as a post-disaster health care and triage facility.
It will continue to serve as a teaching hospital for UBC medicine students, BCIT nursing students and other healthcare professions.
Potential opportunities for future development on the site already have rezoning approval from the City of Vancouver, including an Indigenous Wellness Centre and a hotel. A strata office building has already been announced adjacent to the future hospital.
