The owners of a Gastown heritage building, Low Tide Properties, want to add a sculpture of a Canada Goose atop their building at the corner of Water and Carrall streets.
The building at 21 Water Street is home to the luxury boutique Secret Location and a restaurant.
The proposed, “realistic looking” goose sculpture measures 10 ft. high, and 8.5′ by 5.5′ ft. wide. The goose was chosen as they often nest on the rooftops of Gastown in the spring, and the sculpture is meant to represent the resilience of Canada geese in an urban environment.
“Low Tide Properties, the owner, is committed to revitalizing the Gastown neighbourhood and feel the goose will increase foot traffic for the general public and tourists further East into Maple Tree Square,” states the design rationale from architects Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership.
The goose sculpture is designed by American contemporary artist Richard Jackson, who came to international attention for his 1992 exhibition, ‘Helter Skelter,’ at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
The goose will be fabricated by Carvel Creative of Calgary. Low Tide Properties was founded in 2011 by Vancouver-based businessman and philanthropist Chip Wilson, best known as the creator of Lululemon.
