The Vancouver Park Board is looking for public feedback on a proposal from the Ireland Canada Monument Society to install a monument in George Wainborn Park in Yaletown.
The monument would honour the contributions of Irish Canadians to Vancouver, the province, and Canada.
The non-profit society is funding the monument, and two possible designs are being considered.
Design A:
- names of 32 counties of Ireland engraved in concrete in English and Gaelic
- concrete path through centre of monument inspired by the Irish shoreline with harp symbol engraving
- Irish stone wall with art and family name plates incorporated into the sides
- movable tables and chairs
- maple leaf and shamrock engraved symbols
- garden of Ireland planting
Design B:
- existing path through proposed site to remain
- stone seat wall with harp symbol and maple leaf engraving at ends
- names of 32 counties of Ireland engraved in metal band on side of seating steps, in English and Gaelic
- semi translucent art monument wall
- stone paving surrounding art monument wall
The Park Board says public feedback will help finalize the design before installation later in 2017.
