‘Alluvii’ public art by Blessing Hancock unveiled in North Vancouver

Park West at Lions Gate Village by Keltic Canada Development aims to create a unique, community-centric experience for residents and visitors alike. The developer sought celebrated sculpture artist, Blessing Hancock, to create a unique public art sculpture for the development’s community space, to capture this vision and bring it to life.

Alluvii is a series of three artworks, recently installed at Park West. The name stems from the word ‘alluvion’, a term used to describe the action of a sea or river forming new land by deposition.

Hancock drew inspiration from the neighbouring Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver, as well as from the Capilano River’s ecosystem. The primary, 7.5 metre-high sculpture, located at the intersection of Marine Drive and Capilano Road, is eye-catching. The secondary lanterns and tertiary 17-metre frit wall are designed to guide visitors through the space with visual clues based on their point-of-view. The sculptures can be interpreted in many different ways, such as water dripping from leaves, kayaks going down the river, or a streaming waterfall.

These sculptures integrate nature and new technology with an overall theme of innovation and new experiences. Blessing’s artistic design creates a signature, multi-sensory (light, shadow, colour) art series with varied daytime and dusk-to-dark experiences. The three pieces highlight the area’s unique location and ties to the local ecosystem.

“I believe these artworks offer Park West visitors a new way to live with art – a way in which art enriches the human experience and creates an atmosphere of participation, curiosity and connection to community.” says Hancock.

Keltic Canada Development engaged with the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission to make the public art a reality.

Lori Philips, Public Art Officer, was instrumental in the process.

“Alluvii will serve as a beautiful beacon to the District of North Vancouver’s precious natural resources and spectacular landscape. We look forward to enjoying this striking piece for years to come.”

Now open to the public, Alluvii by Blessing Hancock, can be viewed and experienced firsthand, at Park West at Lions Gate Village, located at 1633 Capilano Road in North Vancouver.
