If you’ve ever wished for a lending library of useful things in your neighbourhood, you’ll soon be able to go to The Thingery.
The Thingery is a community-owned lending library of items in a modified shipping container. The containers are self-serve, meaning members can check items in and out as needed, 24/7.
Items include everything from recreation equipment, kids toys, woodworking tools, event and entertainment equipment, household appliances and musical instruments.
The City of Vancouver has approved three pilot locations for The Thingery, and they should be up and running by fall 2017.
The Thingery Grandview-Woodland
Located outside Mosaic Creek Park, at the corner of Charles Street and McLean Drive. The container will be parked on the east side of McLean Drive.
The Thingery Hastings-Sunrise
Located outside Clinton Park, near the corner of Graveley Street and Slocan Street. The container will be parked on the west side of Slocan Street.
The Thingery Kitsilano
Located outside Delamont Park, close to the corner of 6th Avenue and Arbutus Street. The container will be located just off the Arbutus Greenway at 6th Avenue.
How it works
- Find your local Thingery and become a member online
- Once you’ve joined, use your access card to check out any item you need
- Once you’re done, return the item and your account will be charged for the number of days the item was checked out
The Thingery started out as a project of Vancouver Tool Library co-founder Chris Diplock.
