Strathcona half duplex melds heritage character with modern style

Half of a historic Strathcona heritage home is for sale, blending its heritage character with a modern design.

The listing, by Jessica Chen of Oakwyn Realty, is for a 1,450 sq ft. three-bedroom and den half duplex at 616 Princess Avenue, listed at $1.54 million.

The home was built in 1902 when Princess Avenue was called Carl Avenue, and was built for the Quebec-born widow of Archibald McNair Agnes. Agnes and her son and daughter lived in the house for a number of years, according to local blog House Historian.

Today, the main floor has been opened up with a glass-walled staircase, and a retractable glass wall onto the patio, showering the room in natural light.

Exposed beams run across the ceilings, and herringbone artisan tile is used throughout the bathrooms and kitchen, which features a high-end appliance package including a Bertazzonni gas range.

There is built-in cabinetry on throughout the home. A semi-private front porch looks onto tree-lined Princess Avenue.
