Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver announces closure

The Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver — a fixture of Vancouver’s hospitality scene for more than 40 years — has announced it will be closing permanently on January 31, 2020.

The hotel has had a long term lease with Pacific Centre’s landlord, Cadillac Fairview. The Globe and Mail reports Cadillac Fairview sued the Four Seasons over complaints about how the hotel was being run.

The lawsuit alleges the hotel has not been kept up to the standard of a typical, first-class luxury hotel.

Four Seasons rejects the allegations, and noted in a statement announcing the closure that the hotel recently received a five-star designation in the 2018 Forbes Travel Guide, one of just six Canadian hotels to do so.

The Four Seasons says the current term of the lease with Cadillac Fairview expires in 2020, and will not be renewed.

The statement also says business will continue as usual “until Four Seasons ceases management” and “employees will continue to provide the same legendary service guests have come to expect from Four Seasons.”

Interestingly, the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver is the only property that is still owned and managed by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts anywhere in the world — the remainder are licensed. The downtown Vancouver property opened in 1976.
