The long-awaited reopening of Safeway on Davie Street happens today, May 21.
The new grocery store is part of the mixed-use redevelopment of the site by Westbank and Crombie REIT, which includes 330 rental apartments in two towers. The residential component should be complete later this summer.
The new Safeway will be approximately 44,000 square feet — 12,000 square feet larger than the previous store that stood on the site. The new development will also be home to a Scotiabank branch and a BC Liquor Store outlet. There is also one more retail unit yet to be leased.
The new Safeway store will include a Starbucks cafe and an expanded grab-and-go food section.
The grocer is the second new grocery store to open in downtown Vancouver in 2020. Fresh Street Market in Vancouver House opened in February, before the outbreak of COVID-19.
Meinhardt at Burrard Place will be the next grocery store to open in downtown once the building completes likely next year, followed by Loblaw CityMarket at The Post.
