A new addictions treatment centre and affordable housing complex on city-owned land at East 1st Avenue and Clark Drive will go to an open house June 11th.
The 131,234 sq ft., eight-storey mixed-use building will include:
- 60-100 units of affordable rental housing
- 54,896 sq ft. healthcare facility providing addictions treatment programs including on-site and out-patient withdrawal management
- approximately 20 beds of transitional housing for clients who have completed treatment
- academic teaching, research and social enterprise space
The facility will replace the current Detox Centre at 377 East 2nd Avenue, which has operated for more than 30 years.
The design of the complex will include extensive green roofs, and will have sloped rooflines to decrease the perception of height.
The proposal has faced opposition from a small, but vocal number of residents under the banner “Community 1st.” On their Facebook page, they say the facility will overwhelm the neighbourhood and that’s there been a lack of community consultation. The group is rallying neighbours to attend the upcoming open house to oppose the project.
The open house will be held Monday, June 11, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30Â p.m. in Room 1236 of Building B (access off East 7th Avenue) at Vancouver Community College, 1155 East Broadway. Feedback can also be submitted online here.
Rezoning of the land and final design of the facility is expected to take approximately one year, with construction anticipated to take between three and four years.
