Slender social housing building slated for East Hastings

A slender, seven-storey building with social housing and market rental is planned for East Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside.

The site, at 436 East Hastings between Jackson Avenue and Dunlevy Avenue, is currently a vacant lot.

The new building, designed by Wilson Chang Architect, will include 14 social housing units and eight secured market rental units.

Retail is planned for the ground floor.

The design is a modern interpretation of the slender buildings from the turn of the century throughout the Downtown Eastside. The façade will be made up of painted concrete with large glass openings.

The application is being processed through the Social Housing or Rental Tenure (SHORT) program, a pilot program that aims to speed up the approval and permitting process for affordable housing developments.
