Lonsdale Square construction begins in North Van

Construction of Lonsdale Square, one of the largest projects ever built in the City of North Vancouver, is now underway.

The 6.6-acre development, by Darwin Properties, will transform the upper area of Lonsdale near 22nd Street, and consist of over 800 new homes, including seniors housing, non-profit, and below-market housing, a new 2.25-acre city park and a revitalized Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre. The architects are TKAD Architecture + design.

Phase one is a 113-unit rental apartment building with 8,000 square feet of retail space, constructed by Darwin and Minto Properties Inc. — Minto’s first foray into the Metro Vancouver market.

“Phase one of Lonsdale Square is Minto’s first investment in the Greater Vancouver Area, and we are proud to be partnering with Darwin on this exciting project,” says Michael Waters, chief executive officer of Minto.

Phase one of Lonsdale Square will also include the first seniors assisted housing to be built in the City of North Vancouver in 30 years. The Sunrise Senior Living facility will be six storeys with 100 units for assisted living and memory care. Completion of phase one is expected in Q2 2023.

City of North Vancouver Mayor Linda Buchanan says the project will offer housing for a wide variety of people.

“We know there is a spectrum of housing needs across the community, and for too long, people have struggled to find the right fit for them in the right location,” she says.

Oliver Webbe, CEO of Darwin Properties, says the development will add excitement to the area.

“With the new Harry Jerome Centre, this area will become a vibrant, new energy centre on the North Shore and as a North Vancouver company, we have worked hard to create a development that residents can enjoy for generations to come.”

The master plan for Lonsdale Square includes nearly 700,000 square feet of office, retail and residential. Phase two will include residential condos in two high-rise towers, with additional rental apartments, as well as restaurants, retail and daycare facilities.
