Construction has already begun on Mountain Equipment Coop or MEC’s new Vancouver flagship store on West 2nd Avenue in the Olympic Village, and we are now learning more about plans for the West Broadway property.
Property owners Reliance Properties are working with Los Angeles-based Neil M. Denari Architects, Inc. and IBI’s Vancouver office on a mixed-use, residential twin tower development.
It’s important to note these renderings are only conceptual, and no formal rezoning or development applications have been filed with the City of Vancouver.
Neil M. Denari Architects, Inc. is the same firm behind another bold design, this time for 902 Davie Street, also for Reliance Properties, which we reported on yesterday.
The design for 130 West Broadway looks to be roughly 23 storeys including the podium, which would make it one of the taller buildings along this stretch of Broadway. It would encompass the entire existing Mountain Equipment Coop property, between Manitoba Street and Columbia Street.
MEC has been leasing their current store from Reliance Properties since 1995. Development pressure along the Broadway corridor is increasing, with impending extension of the Millennium Line to Arbutus, and eventually UBC.
The twin towers and podium will add approximately 275,000 square feet. The new, 45,000 sq ft. MEC store on West 2nd Avenue should open in sometime in 2020, and is being developed by Beedie.
