The largest MUJI store outside of Asia will open December 2 on Robson Street, featuring a brand-new store concept.
The 14,507 sq ft. flagship store will carry over 4,500 products, including MUJI Canada’s full range of apparel, household goods and food items.
The Robson Street location will also be home to several MUJI Canada firsts, including:
- MUJI Labo
- What MUJI Labo learns through product development eventually becomes standard apparel in MUJI stores, reflecting practical design and materials that consider both the producer and the environment. MUJI Labo collection is only available in select MUJI flagship stores around the world.
- MUJI Coffee Counter
- MUJI has partnered with Vancouver-based Ethical Bean to offer “simple, affordable coffee by the cup.”
- MUJI YOURSELF
- MUJI YOURSELF is a customization service including embroidery, stamps, gift wrapping and label printing. While stamps, embroidery and gift wrapping are already available in select Canadian stores, the Robson Street location will offer label printing for the first time.
- Aroma Bar
- The Aroma Bar will allow customers to create a customized fragrance blend by choosing from more than 40 essential oils. In addition to regular MUJI essential oils, customers will have many more options to further personalize their home.
The location, at 1125 Robson Street, was formerly home to the Gap and has been fully renovated to MUJI’s specifications.
Toru Akita, president of MUJI Canada, says shoppers can expect a relaxing and pleasant shopping experience at the new downtown Vancouver location.
“This year marks a big step for MUJI Canada as we finally expanded to Western Canada and we will soon open our first flagship store,” he says. “The goal of the Robson Street store is to deepen our relationships with local communities while offering new services and products in a distinctive retail space. In addition, by creating a relaxing environment with coffee, books and plants, we hope to help customers to make better choices toward creating their own pleasant lifestyle.”
MUJI expanded to Canada in 2014, with the opening of four Toronto-area stores. Earlier this year, MUJI expanded to B.C. with the opening of the Metropolis at Metrotown location in Burnaby.
The opening of the retailer will be a welcome development for the 1100-block of Robson Street, which has been struggling with retail vacancies in recent years. Analysts say a new destination retailer on Robson should help draw others to the block, and the opening of MUJI’s flagship store will boost interest.
