Condos may save the Hollywood Theatre in Kitsilano

A plan to revive the art deco Hollywood Theatre in Kitsilano, and add a six-storey condominium building, is seeking approval from city hall.

It’s the latest plan to save the 82-year-old theatre. Several years ago, the idea of turning the historic building into a fitness centre was shelved.

The Save the Hollywood Theatre Coalition has been working tirelessly to ensure that the theatre remains as a cultural space, and it appears this proposal may be the answer.

The development will allow for the restoration of the theatre into a state-of-the-art, renovated performing arts centre. The theatre will be managed by a team including Sean Mwhinney, building manager and head of maintenance for the Commodore Ballroom and the Vogue Theatre; and David Hawkes, former on-air personality, DJ and music producer.

The new condominium building will include six studios, 32 one-bedroom units, 16 two-bedroom units and five three-bedroom units. There will also be retail units at grade, and two levels of underground parking. The architect is Marianne Amodio Architecture Studio.

An open house is scheduled for March 15, 2018 at the St. James Community Centre Hall, from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
