SkyTrain Capstan Station Opening For Service In Early Fall 2023

Capstan Station will be a new Canada Line station in the City of Richmond, built in the area of No. 3 Road and Capstan Way. It will be located between the existing Bridgeport and Aberdeen stations.

TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn announced that Capstan Station, located near the northeast corner of the intersection of No. 3 Road and Capstan Way, is now expected to be completed in Summer 2023, with regular service beginning as early as Fall 2023.

When construction began in September 2021, the public transit authority had expected an opening in early 2023. Quinn provided an update on the station’s construction progress, including the completion of the concourse level’s roof, masonry walls for the back-of-house rooms, and the installation of escalator frames, as well as progress on the platform level, such as the installation of concrete flooring, wood roof panels, and guideway work.

The station’s $52 million cost is being split between Richmond residential developers, who have contributed $32 million, and TransLink, who will contribute the remaining $20 million. Once completed, the station will serve the high-density Capstan Village neighbourhood, which is expected to have 16,000 residents living in 6,000 homes within roughly a 10-minute walking radius from the station.

The station features longer and wider platforms, both up and down escalators, larger circulation areas for passengers, and space for a retail unit, and its design was created by the Office of McFarlane Biggar Architects & Designers.

Capstan Station is the second station TransLink has built on an existing active segment of a SkyTrain line; the first was Lake City Way Station, completed in November 2003, nearly two years after the opening of the original Millennium Line.
