Southgate City to transform Edmonds Town Centre

Ledingham McAllister has begun marketing a massive, 60-acre development in the Edmonds neighbourhood of Burnaby called Southgate City.

The development is on the site of the former Safeway Distribution Centre and a dairy plant that was sold to Ledingham McAllister in 2011 for approximately $125 million.

Renderings for Southgate City show up to 20 towers in the development, surrounded by low rise buildings. Preliminary plans for the development by the City of Burnaby allow buildings up to 46 stories, and a 15-20 year build-out process.

When the entire master planned development is complete, it will contain approximately 5.88 million square feet of market residential, and 588,365 sq. ft. of non-market/affordable housing. 200,000 sq. ft. of retail is also proposed along 16th Street. There will also be a new community centre built as part of the development.

The developer says the towers will surround a five-acre, city-owned park with water features. Transit is close by, as the Edmonds Skytrain station is only two blocks away from the site. The City of Burnaby is also moving forward on plans for a new twin rink in the neighbourhood.

The Edmonds Town Centre is just the latest town centre in Burnaby to see a large development proposal. Construction is already underway on Shape Properties’ redevelopment of Brentwood Mall as “The Amazing Brentwood.” Farther east, Shape Properties has also begun presales of the first phase of their redevelopment of Lougheed Town Centre, called “The City of Lougheed.”

Construction of new high-rise residential towers is nothing new at Metrotown, with the most recent towers springing up on Beresford Street south of the Metrotown shopping centre. Now it appears it’s Edmonds Town Centre’s turn.

Registration is underway at SouthgateCity.com. No word yet on pricing or unit sizes in phase one.
